Default Cleaning my Dyson

I have a DC-11 (canister). I've emptied it several times, of course,
though I find the advice to hold it inside a garbage bag and re-close
the bins within it just leads to a dirty exterior. So today I washed
it.

First I removed the bins and washed them off, a big improvement. Then
I rinsed out the cyclone part, it was filthy (the water kept coming
off dirty, in fact still does). I figured after I was done I'd leave
it outside for a couple of days to dry thoroughly. Then I found the
manual. It says don't wash the cyclone part!

Have I broken it? Is it just a matter of letting it drying
thoroughly?

Any advice will be most appreciated. Thanks!
