Default Installing a gate beside our house

We have a small city lot where the house beside us is nearly touching
our house at the rooftop. There is a walk way between the houses, but
nothing else on one side (ie the walk butts up against our house) and
only about 5" of dirt on the other side of the walkway.

My question is, how to we install posts if there's no room for them?
Can we attach it directly to our house on one side and install a small
post in the 5" width of dirt on the other side? I've tried researching
this on the internet but none I have found address my specific problem.

Thanks so much for any advice.

Ask your local planning/zoning department

WTF does the goevernment have to do with this? There is no zoning
issue in the Q. You want them to call the government to ask how to
attach a post to their house????

Many places require a permit for a gate or fence. I suppose they might
not allow one in a tight area between two homes for fire regulations. I
just don't know. If my neighbor and I agreed on there being a gate, we
would have one up by the weekend though.
That said, the building department around here is very helpful in
suggesting construction ideas. If they have lots of homes like hers in
the area they could copy a plan for her. A gate is just not a big deal.

It sounds real easy. You could attach the posts to the houses. How you
do that depends upon the structure.
Also, for such a small fence you could sink metal posts in that 5" of
dirt. I use an auger attached to a drill. The size of both depends on
your needs. I can go down about 4' and that's plenty. I still think
some support would be needed at the top with an attachment to the
structure.

Gee, if there REALLY IS no room for them, you can't can you?

Attaching to your house is your business. Ask your neighbor and maybe
they will let you attach to their house too, IF they think it is
indeed in their interests to prevent entry to this area. Then there
will be no posts at all. (Or they could tell you to stay the F off
their house - then you'll need a post - and gee, maybe there IS room
for one after all!!!)

So, where is the property line? I don't think you actually said, only
talked about the sidewalk and the dirt. If its not your dirt, you
can't put a post there. You may need to put the post through the
concrete. Just because YOU don't presently posses the equipment to do
this, doesn't mean it can't be done. The most elegant way is to have
the hole core drilled. But the walk could also be jackhammered out in
that area, the hole dug, and then the walk replaced.

There IS certainly room for a post - just not without cutting concrete
to get it in.

Wow, I don't recall stating that I don't have the equipment, so it
can't be done. ? You sound like a very angry, unhappy person. I'm so
glad I'm not you!

Anyways, thanks everyone for your help. I always get fantastic tips
from the newsgroups, and once again it helped answer my questions.
Thanks again!
