Default black screen with single horizontal bright line

My Toshiba CX29699, is 14yrs old. Suddenly I have lost the entire picture
and only have a black screen with a single horizontal bright line through
it. I still get sound. Is this a picture tube problem? Is there a
simple fix or, should I start shopping for a new TV?

No vertical deflection.

People unfamiliar with the inner workings of televisions usually suspect
the picture tube when faced with picture faults. I suspect you are one
of those people. Since there are dangerous voltages inside the
television even after the mains have been disconnected, it is best not
to tamper with it unless you are 100% sure what you are doing.

The vertical deflection problem is usually fairly easy to fix by a
professional. Given the age of this set I don't think it is worth it.
Even if you get this set fixed it is likely it will develop other
problems in the not too distant future. You could get an estimate and
decide for yourself.

Hi Peter,

This is a very simple problem.Quite inexpensive to fix.

Resolder the vertical IC and all related components.
Replace all eletrolytic capacitors related to this IC.
If that does not fix your TV, then replace the vertical IC.
That should do it in most cases.

If you left the tv on in this condition with the line across the tube,
you certainly damaged the phosphor of the picture tube and the line
will always be visible even after a proper repair.

The tv set has a failure in the vertical deflection circuit.
Typically worth fixing if the tv had a good picture (color,
brightness, and focus) before the failure. Given that it is 14 or so
years old, be very honest with the quality of picture before it
failed.

If the estimate to repair when you take the tv into the service shop
is under 1/3rd the cost to replace the tv with a comparable quality tv
set, it is worth fixing in most cases. (note: no junk brands for
price comparisons)
