Default SHARP VCR... problems

Sharp VC-994B VCR from ~1989. Made in Brazil IIRC.
Problem:

It has a function, which allows to automatically switch between NTSC & PAL
formats. When using the function, the image suddenly loses colors and the vcr
starts switching between NTSC and PAL, as the display shows. Using the tracking
control has a very small(near nothing) effect. Moving the selector switch to any
position, then returning to AUTO makes the auto-selection of PAL/NTSC work fine.

What could be causing this problem? I'd like to repair it as it's a very good
VCR.
