When i turn on the receiver after it goes through a couple of displays
it shows protector on the display and it seems to smell hot.What is
causing this problem and please explain in layman terms as i am not
familiar with electronics to much,also is this fixable by me.Thanks for
all the help.Tom

If the unit still does this with the speakers disconnected it needs
repaired.
There is more likely a failure in one of the audio output channels that
needs troubleshot and repaired.

Repairable by you? If you have the equipment and knowledge required to
safely and accurately troubleshoot the failures in circuit and then replace
the offending parts.

The symptoms you describe do not indicate to me that you are likely to be
able to repair this yourself.

Either get it to a competent shop, or you may just consider a new receiver -
yours is still a "mid-fi" model - a newer one would have the latest
features.
