Default standard 230 watt pc supply dies?

-upon power up PC boots and works ok for few minutes if you
disconnected the HDD( I guess until something heats up inside the
supply)
and if you connect hdd and external usb pen drive then upon power up ,
no graphics to monitor at all although PC seems to boot again
-tested motherboard with another supply and replaced the big 16v
capacitors in power supply but still the same,what else(component)
could be wrong with it?

If it works with another supply, why waste time with the bad one?

Heat-related failures can be bad solder joints, which are sensitive
to a sharp rap with a stick, or just about ANY semiconductor
component (one usually applies freeze-mist spot cooling and
sees where it makes a difference).

More important, power supplies have overcurrent protections,
like a fuse, built in. When it goes into 'protect' mode, the
power supply shuts down, BUT THAT ISN'T THE FAULT.
The fault is whatever is drawing too much current. A different
power supply, with a different limit, might not shut down,
but that doesn't mean the fault has been found; something
might still be drawing too much current.
