Hi,
I have an HW7 and I am trying to align the VFO to the dial, but I need a tool to turn the lower core what tool do I use? I have tried some of the various tools at Radio Shack but they are too wide and turn the upper core as well. There is no spec for this tool, any help will greatly be appreciated. Rob |

Rob- I have the HW-8, and the tool for that is the Heath part number 490-1. The 490-1 is a combination tool that Heath supplied with several other kits such as the HW-100/SB-100 series. I have one tool that I believe to be the 490-1, but there is no marking on it other than the Heath name. I measured mine, although it may have worn some over the years. Picture a white plastic tool with a dual hex at each end. The first hex is about 0.070 or 0.075 inches flat-to-tlat, and 1/4 inch long. The second hex is about 0.100 inches flat-to-flat, also 1/4 inch long. At one end, the neck is about 0.125 inches diameter by 1 inch long, so it cannot be inserted any deeper than the second hex. At the other end, the neck is about 0.09 inches diameter by 2 3/8 inches long. Thus, it allows the hex portion to pass through the first slug, and enter the second. The two ends are separated by a grip that is about 0.225 inches diameter by 1 3/4 inches long. If you have the manual, there should be a drawing of it in the mechanical parts list, and that should make these dimensions make sense. If you didn't know already, using a metal tool to adjust these cores will almost certainly crack them. The cracked edges of the core will dig into the coil form, making it very difficult to turn them! 73, Fred K4DII |

Try a TV parts jobber for tools. |

Try a TV parts jobber for tools. Are you sticking the part that fits the top slug - far enough in to "fit" the bottom slug and "not" interfere with the top slug? BOTH slugs usually use the same size tool. IF nothing else, remove the bottom cover. The same coil with the Bottom slug - SHOULD be accessible there. |
