Interestingly, (to me, anyway) I still use SDT (which runs perfectly in a DOS window on my XP box) for schematic capture, and all of the "formal" drawings which I post to abse are ORCAD .dxf's which I've converted to .pdf. We used a subbie for PCB. Although somewhere I do have V3.22 ? copy of PCB. Graham |

It was certainly on 5 1/4 " Oh wow, one of those fancy dancy 'new' versions. Mine is 1.25 (1986). LOL Remember the 8 inch floppies in the Intel 'blue boxes' too ? I'n sure I still have one somewhere as a momento. . Remember making library items using a text editor as an option ? Yeah. Been a long time but, if I remember correctly, you then 'compiled' it into a parts library file with composer. You could be right. Maybe that was an earlier version I started on than 3.21 then ? Really is amazing to see how far things have come. The Orcad/SDT 1.25 schematic capture program "DRAFT" is 83.6K, that's K. The overlay file is 13.8K for a whopping 97.4K. On a modern program just the splash screen is bigger than that. The whole thing, with all 'utilities' and drivers, plus a half dozen projects, doesn't fill one floppy. And the floppy held the OS too. We plotted at 4x and then had photos taken. Then came the real PC CAD packages for PCB layout. There has been a lot since '86 though. The selections are numerous, the complexity diverse. The stuff on my PC now as far as legacy goes is TangoPCB. It prints to HP laser printers and is the best damned little layout package for sub 4 layer work you can get. Quick and dirty (quite clean actually). Sure, it will do more than that, but at that point the better, newer packages are the right tool. For little two sided or simple SMT stuff though, it is pretty damn good. It easily does 0402 form factor stuff. |
