Has anybody seen any construction articles related to HD radio receivers?
From what I've heard, it is more software than hardware but might be
interesting to tinker with.
I found some white papers on the technology on the ibiquity website.

will hack it. I haven't listened to one of the HD radios yet but most of the
broadcasters in the metro New York City area are transmitting with it. Right
now, I find it annoying as hell as most of the HD broadcasts make a
background whine in my 2001 Saturn (premium) car radio.

The technology looks to be OK, but it's nothing any decent group couldn't cook
up on their own: They use OFDM and some standard CoDecs, the "proprietary"
part is just in how they put together the entire bitstream and multiplex it
amongst the carriers. I agree that -- in all likelihood -- sooner or later
someone will hack it. Heck, if HD Radio *does* catch on, there's a good
chance that a well-funded Chinese engineering group will do so! (Plenty of
money to be made selling cheap radios...)

Yeah, the whole idea of, "we'll jus stick this spread signal off in the far
sidebands of the regular FM channel, and it'll just be a bit of noise that
traditional radios won't hear" is predicated upon the notion that those
"traditional" radios will somehow start having much sharper IF filters than
they often do, or that the listener simply won't object to the whine.

Yep, I agree. They're in the same league as all the companies that label
their products "USB 2.0" knowing that most people will assume that means
"...high-speed (480Mbps)," when, in actuality, it's just a full-speed (12Mbps)
USB 2.0 product.

Now don't get all uppidy on me James. It is a very nice, loaded, LW300 that
was a fleet lease. I got it with 40K on it and two years old for about $10K.
Got almost 100K miles on it now and the only repairs it has needed were
brakes, tires, one O2 sensor and a MAF (surprisingly, only about $100).
Water pump just went and I had the timing belt changed at the same time
since it was due. Stock audio system and it has a pretty good sound.

Of course, when Saturn got called home the the GM fold, the L series was
cancelled as it competed with other GM lines. The L series was designed in
Germany by Opel. The engine is the same one used in the Cadallac Catera, the
L81, 3Liter V6, 24 valve, DOHC.

Doesn't cary as much as your pick-em-up truck but I do have a class 1 hitch.

That's a bit early for a water pump and sensor to go. My Mits is 10
years old now and the Toyota is even older. None of that has ever
happened. Same on my Audi Station that I sold at about 100K Miles. Got a

Well, it DOES stand for true 20 - 20kHz with near zero baseline
noise, which FM never did.

That is enough to make it grow alone.

It is already being broadcast, so ther must already be receivers for
it.

Did you miss the part where many people -- Jim and myself included -- live in
areas of the country where the only local radio stations are trash that we're
not interested in listening to? And in general these stations probably won't
even switch over to HD radio anytime soon?

I think both Sirius and XM are run by MBAs who are so addicted to "growth at

merge themselves whereby they can both still come out "ahead"... from a

I mean... I think subscriber-based satellite radio is a 100% solid business
proposition, and will be for at least the next decade or so... it's just the
names of the players involved that may change over time.

That is the big that reason I won't subscribe. If they can throw
money away like that, they don't need any more from me. I get a nice
country music stream online for free. I'm home over 95% of the time
because of my health, and I didn't have to buy a receiver, or set up a
subscription.

Personally, I don't think Howard Stern's juvenile crap is worth a
dollar a decade, although he sounds like he'd be Passive DingDong's
hero.

first. I'm all for being able to pick nearly ANY station across the

Actually, it will take a dump because of both HD radio, and broadband
access to nationwide net streaming stations, of which their are
hundreds. I'd rather hear an ad every ten minutes and get it free,

I've been installing 23 security cameras for a new jewelry store and I am
