Has anybody seen any construction articles related to HD radio receivers?
From what I've heard, it is more software than hardware but might be
interesting to tinker with.
I found some white papers on the technology on the ibiquity website.

I doubt you'll see any at all soon. As far as I can tell, the only way to get
the HD radio codec spec out of iBiquity is to sign a licensing agreement with
them, which requires paying royalties if you start building radios and
precludes your releasing the spec to anyone else. Hence, you won't be seeing
any, e.g., GNU Radio projects relating to HD radio any time soon...

If the technology is everything that they are advertizing it is, somebody
will hack it. I haven't listened to one of the HD radios yet but most of the
broadcasters in the metro New York City area are transmitting with it. Right
now, I find it annoying as hell as most of the HD broadcasts make a
background whine in my 2001 Saturn (premium) car radio.

The technology looks to be OK, but it's nothing any decent group couldn't cook
up on their own: They use OFDM and some standard CoDecs, the "proprietary"
part is just in how they put together the entire bitstream and multiplex it
amongst the carriers. I agree that -- in all likelihood -- sooner or later
someone will hack it. Heck, if HD Radio *does* catch on, there's a good
chance that a well-funded Chinese engineering group will do so! (Plenty of
money to be made selling cheap radios...)

Yeah, the whole idea of, "we'll jus stick this spread signal off in the far
sidebands of the regular FM channel, and it'll just be a bit of noise that
traditional radios won't hear" is predicated upon the notion that those
"traditional" radios will somehow start having much sharper IF filters than
they often do, or that the listener simply won't object to the whine.

Yep, notice how they hype "HD" "HD" "HD", but they never really say Hybrid
Digital....not ever.....not even once...... It's obvious that they hope
that everyone will make the mistake of assuming that it stands for "High

Yep, I agree. They're in the same league as all the companies that label
their products "USB 2.0" knowing that most people will assume that means
"...high-speed (480Mbps)," when, in actuality, it's just a full-speed (12Mbps)
USB 2.0 product.

Sirius Satellite Radio was originally going to be called "Satellite CD Radio"
or something like that. As with the phrase "CD quality," "HD anything"
has pretty much become a meaningless as well.

It'll be intriguing to see if HD radio takes off... Sirius & XM satellite
radio are doing OK if not great (they're trying to merge themselves at the
moment), so I suppose the upside of HD radio is "free" to compete with
XM/Sirius's "uncensored, nationwide coverage, and many more channels."

And here I was worried that given another few decades the '80s station would
be pulled. :-)

The shuffle channel (12) occasionally has some good stuff from the '60s on
it -- older than that doesn't seem to show up often.

In your case, Jim, I imagine the lifetime subscription option for Sirius might
make a lot of sense! (It's something like $499, and while the "lifetime" is
either "yours" or "after 3 receiver swaps, at $75/ea," for some people you
still come out well ahead.)

Now don't get all uppidy on me James. It is a very nice, loaded, LW300 that
was a fleet lease. I got it with 40K on it and two years old for about $10K.
Got almost 100K miles on it now and the only repairs it has needed were
brakes, tires, one O2 sensor and a MAF (surprisingly, only about $100).
Water pump just went and I had the timing belt changed at the same time
since it was due. Stock audio system and it has a pretty good sound.
http://www.theautochannel.com/vehicl...ergap0103.html

Of course, when Saturn got called home the the GM fold, the L series was
cancelled as it competed with other GM lines. The L series was designed in
Germany by Opel. The engine is the same one used in the Cadallac Catera, the
L81, 3Liter V6, 24 valve, DOHC.

Doesn't cary as much as your pick-em-up truck but I do have a class 1 hitch.

That's a bit early for a water pump and sensor to go. My Mits is 10
years old now and the Toyota is even older. None of that has ever
happened. Same on my Audi Station that I sold at about 100K Miles. Got a
lot more on it now with the new owner yet nothing broke. Ok, a fender
did because a food service truck driver backed up a bit fast and ka-crunch.

I had a L300 rental once. Nice ride. Except that the kind of tires on it
was a bit iffy and one promptly blew out on me :-(

Well, it DOES stand for true 20 - 20kHz with near zero baseline
noise, which FM never did.

That is enough to make it grow alone.

It is already being broadcast, so ther must already be receivers for

I could believe that, for people living in decent-sized cities, some people

I think both Sirius and XM are run by MBAs who are so addicted to "growth at
all costs" that they engage in incredibly risky ventures, such as Sirius
paying Howard Stern $500 MILLION for a 5 year deal (although kudos to Stern's
lawyer or whoever brokered that deal for *him*!). Sirius and XM both have
large enough bases it's almost a given that, if one or the other were to
declare bankruptcy, *someone* would purchase them and keep the system
running -- even if it meant losing a bunch of the high-dollar "big talent"
such as Stren and returning to the traditional (and cheap!) format of "lots of
music, news, sports, and comedy -- when it's cheap." :-) Of course going
bankrupt is attractive to no one, so instead you see XM and Sirius trying to
merge themselves whereby they can both still come out "ahead"... from a
certain point of view.

I mean... I think subscriber-based satellite radio is a 100% solid business
proposition, and will be for at least the next decade or so... it's just the
names of the players involved that may change over time.

That is the big that reason I won't subscribe. If they can throw
money away like that, they don't need any more from me. I get a nice
country music stream online for free. I'm home over 95% of the time
because of my health, and I didn't have to buy a receiver, or set up a
subscription.

Personally, I don't think Howard Stern's juvenile crap is worth a

I'll bet he never sees it, and it WAS and IS contingent on

He probably hasn't even seen 10M of it yet, and likely won't see

Yes. You are cursed.

Get in line Bozo.

I don't even need to lift a finger, retard.

Your
chances of dying are better than mine, with that mouth of yours.

Not even close. Grow the **** up, dip****.

The big drawback to "HD" is there are many places in Arizona where I
can only receive a Mexican station... except I have Sirius... I love
it... 1950's rock and roll... I'm back in heaven ;-)

And here I was worried that given another few decades the '80s station
would
be pulled. :-)

The shuffle channel (12) occasionally has some good stuff from the '60s on
it -- older than that doesn't seem to show up often.

In your case, Jim, I imagine the lifetime subscription option for Sirius
might
make a lot of sense! (It's something like $499, and while the "lifetime"
is
either "yours" or "after 3 receiver swaps, at $75/ea," for some people you
still come out well ahead.)

I'll look into that. I'm about to add Sirius to my pick-em-up
truck... so I can listen to Blue Collar Comedy... you know how us
rednecks are ;-)

What no Paul Harvey?

;)

If I want Paul harvey I'll just drive up to Carefree and say, "Hi".

Actually I'll be heading up that way this weekend... the wife has an
urge for deep-fried chilies at "Satisfied Frog" ;-)

Yep, from his home.

(You can't find Carefree on the map? It's on the north edge of
Phoenix :-)

Sorry Jim, I didn't try.

I've been installing 23 security cameras for a new jewelry store and I am
worn out. Only 3 runs remaining for Friday.
