It's going to be a right pain if I have to send it back, as I bought over
the Internet, and I'll also have to transfer nearly 40hrs of recordings
onto dvd-rs, but if you reckon that it's the "best" thing to do then I'll
probably do it soonish.

Out of intertest, would you care to hazard a guess as to why it's doing
it, faulty connections somewhere that cures itself when the unit heats up,
thus causing bad connection to expand and therefore make the contact good?

Most likely a faulty capacitor, but could also be a thermally defective IC
or transistor.
It would be easy to find the offending component with a tin of freeze spray,
but as it's under warranty, that's not the best course of action!
