oxygen mix instead of nitrogen oxygen (air), because maybe the helium
doesn't give them "the bends" as easily as nitrogen?

yes.
nitrogen dissolves in blood under pressure. it comes out as bubbles when the
pressure lets off, causing the bends.
helium doesn't.
