I don't know. Could be they weren't interested at first, then decided it
would be easier to buy an existing company, designs, patents, etc..


AMP was the grand old man of the connector
industry. 1,000,000 separate line items
in their prime. Salesmen with pockets full
of samples, ready to come out at a moment's
notice.

Their products were not cheap, but they worked
and AMP had a beautiful line of tooling to
apply the connectors.

Eventually the simple parts became second-
sourced in Taiwan for pennies on the dollar.
Tyco cleaned house and now AMP is a shell
of what it used to be.

Another Bridgeport, Monarch, etc...
