The birds are in a constellation X miles above the Equator on a
certain bearing. In the case of the Astra 2 group, it is 28.2 degrees
east of south as you look south - i.e. they are to the west of the
meridian.
If you work from these heights and bearings and curvature of the
Earth, the angle above the horizon can be calculated.
