I have a Powermatic Mod 63 Artisan saw. It makes an incredible noise when
the blade protrudes less than about half an inch above the table. Any
higher and no noise. If I loosen the tension on the depth adjusting wheel
the noise ceases. Does anyone have any ideas about this one. I have tried
pushing everything under the table (trunions, arbor, swing castings etc.)
with the saw running and nothing changes the pitch of the noise. Taking
tension off the belt by lifting the motor a little reduces the noise
somewhat. I am suspicious that the bearings may be bad but cannnot see why
blade exposure would influence the noise. Any thoughts will be
appreciated.

What kind of noise???

If you suspect bearings check first that the pulleys are tight. Often they
loosen and the wobble of the pulley will produce a loud fast
clicking/knocking noise. Second try flipping the belt around so that it
spins backwards if it is a normal v-belt. Belts can make a lot of noise
also and reversing the spin will change the noise. If the noise changes, a
new belt may fix the problem.
