I would keep an eye out for a surplussed drafting table. No matter what =
shape it was in as long as the center column lift still worked. Could be =
done pretty cheap that way.

Yeah, I hear you. I'd almost rather have the lift than the TV. Seems
like a fun toy.

I've thought a lot about building my own lift too (again, not that I
have a TV for it). You know just for planning purposes.

My thought was to use four pieces of allthread at the corners of the
cabinet. The platform would ride on the althread. The althread would
run from a set of bicycle chains and gears hooked up to a motor.
Finding the right motor might be a challenge... of course, my old
1-1/2hp 3450 rpm table saw motor would raise a TV 30 inches in around
10 seconds (1:1 drive ratio on 1/4-20 allthread). It's actually really
quiet too.

I guess cable routing becomes a bit of an issue, but a nice long
s-video or component cable shouldn't be too much trouble to manage with
a spring or bungee cord system. Maybe if you insulated the drive shaft,
you could use three of the allthreads for power (one for ground, of
course

But I digress. I'm not going to be buying one of those tvs until the
price gets well under $300. At that point, the $1300 Rockler model
seems obscene, so I probably would be able to talk SWMBO into letting
me make it.

Hmmm...
