The (very) old white meter system simply activated a separate circuit
during the night. This circuit was usually confined to storage
heaters. The "new" (err....about 20 years) system simply switches
the meter between two charging tariffs. If you put your washing
machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher on at night this can give a
considerable saving.
