I'll probably buy from one of the "sheds" (CarpetWorld etc.) but am
thinking of arranging delivery and fitting myself.

Is it possible to transport a piece of roll carpet, say 4m x 4m 50/50
wool twist for the sake of argument, in the back of a small
Fiesta-sized hatchback?

Would such a carpet roll fold over OK to fit in the back?

Definitely not! You'll wreck it if you fold it double and then roll it. It
needs to be rolled round a stiff cardboard tube 4 metres long and about 15cm
in diameter. The only way to transport it in a small car is on roof bars -
and even that isn't very satisfactory. Can't you have it delivered?

And how much would such a piece of carpet weigh?

Quite a lot!

Is it a two-man job to load and unload it?

Yes.
