I share your same intuition... but there is no evidence to back it.

This is a good example of where "common sense" and evidence might clash.
Common sense says there is an underlying mechanism that is deterministic, but
the evidence at least for now does not support that. Then we can get into
really weird stuff like the double slit experiment and strange attraction. Not
that I am anything close to an expert in those, but common sense does not
apply there!

The evidence does not include as yet undiscovered methods of measuring the tiny insides of small things.
