51 years ago, I had a vacation job in Hales' Cake Factory
in Clevedon, and worked on the Battenberg Cake production line.

What a disappointment today is the Lyons' version in comparison,
over-sweetened and much smaller in size!

In 1970 it was a manual operation taking the 3ft square sponge
cases and cutting then down to size, but, I have to say, there
was huge wastage destined for the pigswill bins.
