I'm thinking of buying a dash camera for the car, as IĀ* nearly had

Any recommendations from the NG?

I am very happy with this one, which also has a waterproof rear view
camera and GPS input:

Though I'm at a loss to work out, how a blob stuck to the windscreen
is "completely hidden from view" (second picture)

Perhaps hidden from the driver's field of view would be more accurate.
Mine is also behind the interior mirror and is not visible during
normal driving.

so how is it usable as a reversing camera then?

It isn't. The separate rear view camera is there to record what is
happening behind you while driving. That would have been useful when a
chap drove into the back of me while I was stopped in traffic, except
that he admitted full responsibility, so I didn't need to provide any
evidence.
The sales blurb seems to imply that use (though doesn't say it explicitly)

The parking option mentioned means the camera will turn on and record if
it detects a disturbance while parked - somebody trying to break in or
the car getting a knock from another car.
