I think most of my examples are sacrificial though.

'Sacrificial' means that the
item is lost, damaged, eroded, etc IN ORDER TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO
SOMETHING ELSE.

Too late, I'm afraid. For the purposes of this thread, "sacrificial" now
means something entirely different, and *that* is what the vast bulk of
posts and posters will be addressing.
