Default ? kenmore washer repair tech advice

(spacekase) wrote in message . com...
i've got a 12yr + kenmore series 60 washer that needs repair. i've
looked at the spec drawings at sears.com and am not sure..... the
thing runs fine, except during spin cycle = the center agitator, while
spinning with the barrel, develops this grinding noise - sounds like
teeth on a gear - and as the barrel picks up speed, the agitator
'grabs' and stops for a moment - with a loud bang!. the whole unit
continues on and spins normally and the 'grind and bang' continue. if
i open the lid during spin and physically grab the agitator and hold
it still during active spin cycle, the unit runs on, finishes spin
cycle and drains. the grinding sound appears to be coming from within
the barrel and not from below. i guess my ? is.... will this be the
brake mechanism? or will it be the clutch mechanism? i dont know
enough about the functin of these systems and am unsure that if i get
it apart i will be able to tell the bad part(s)...also any tricks for
reassembly of unit i should know??? thanks

Hi,

Model#??

-Some- model# helps.

The agitator should just -go along for the ride- during the spin
mode....possible something inside the agitator is worn/broken or the
noise is from the gearbox. Brake and or clutch should effect the spin
from working normally if they where giving problems. Maybe take the
agitator out and try a spin to see what noises occur or what happens??
