Yes, you can replace just the one lamp with an LED. The consequence is you
will reduce total power consumption of the fixture.

Yes, but for cosmetic reasons, you may want to use LEDs that are a
Kelvin color match to the incandescent bulbs you still will be using in
that fixture. Typically, 40W incandescent bulbs are 2700-3000 K, which
is a "warm white" LED.
