Actually, the majority *do* jump the lights. If the pedestrian "red/green
man" lights show red and there is clearly no traffic coming for a safe
distance, most of us will cross even if though the "man" says stop. I
believe in some countries this is an offence (jaywalking) but not in the UK.

I'm sure jaywalking became an offence in this country about 50
years ago (but I've never heard of anybody being prosecuted
for it!)
