Default Why aren't AA batteries square?

But no one would have brought then as they were used in the same
devices as SP7s HP7s so where made in the same shape for that to happen.

Ok, if HP7s had been made square in the first place, the problem
wouldn't have arisen.

The HP7 is a successor to the old Penlight battery. Penlight torches
would be uncomfortable to hold if square section.

I wonder why they don't make PP3s 'round'

Because they were originally designed to work pocket transistor radios
and can fit neatly inside without wasting space. Also the casing isn't
structural and so there are no strength or material economy considerations.
