Default Harsh reality in one of USA's poorest towns where people won't vote because they can't afford bus fare

Americans are the most generous people in the world,

bloody murder when it is suggested perhaps a tiny morsel of their
(tax) money might go towardss some "socialist" program that puts some
of it into the hands of those who have not "worked for it".
In that way, many Americans are among the "stingiest" people in the
world. Like that ancient queen of france - "they canot afford bread?
- Them let them eat cake".

Take a look for yourself. Our poor people have more amenities than
the poor in other countries.

Air conditioning
Home heating
Smart phones
Game consoles
Expensive cars like Cadillacs
Plasma 50" televisions
Internet access
Cable TV
Computers
Clean water in the home
Indoor Toilets
Food stamps
Government housing
Electricity
Light bulbs
Dining ware like plates, spoons, forks & knives.
Shelter to live in
Locks on their doors

What did I miss?

There was a world conference on helping the poor and an American attendee said,"Some of our people are so poor, they have to live in their cars." A Third World attendee was shocked and blurted out,"Your poor people own cars?!" O_o

There are many poor in America who have no air conditioning, cannot
afford the electricity, propane, or oil required to heat their homes,
have NO phone, NO game consolesw, can only afford to drive 20 year old
cadilacs because no-one else wants them so they are as cheap as a
bicycle, have an old 26 inch CRT TV that's no good now because there
is no analog OTA TV any more, and there is no cable or high speed
internet available IF they could afford it. Some still carry their
water from a well in the back yard and have no indoor plumbing - but
those are getting fewer and farther between.
Food stamps are pretty universal, but getting government housing can
be a 10 year wait in many areas -

Do they have it better than the poor in many third world countries?
Definitely. But that's no excuse.
