Why does a UK paper send a reporter to Kentucky to tsk-tsk about poverty in
the US when the poverty rate in the UK is higher than in the US?

The British like to condescend. I think it is in their water.

They forgot to mention the main cause of unemployment in Kentucky, the
closing down of the coal business. Saving the planet may be a worthy
cause but it comes at the cost of making a lot of poor people a bit
poorer. There are a dozen states here that get a significant amount of
their money from coal in one way or another.

So they don't have to deal with their own problems. Then they feel

It gives you something to do instead of focusing on your
own county's problems and trying to solve them. Someone
else's problems are always more interesting and it gives
people some sort of satisfaction to point fingers.

U.S. population 325 million. Population of UK 65 million. On average, there are 269 people per sq.km in The UK and 35 people per sq.km in The U.S. The countries do not compare except we sort of speak the same language. Heck, you'd think a seafaring people would drive on the right side of the road. Americans don't bow to anyone except for stage actors and our Mulatto Gay Muslim President. (€’€Ώ€’)

This is more like your Brexit vote. Ballots not bullets. I think the
republican party will be the eventual victim and that is not really a
good thing. We (the world) have not had a good result when we tear
down an institution without understanding what will rise up in the
vacuum. I doubt the giddy left will like the "new" GOP.

It is hardly a "tiny morsel." Social programs consume a large amount of
tax revenue. They have not worked either. The Dims have been at the "Great
Society" bull**** for something like 50 years now and have not yet figured
out that it just does not work. They seem to believe that following the
same failed policies will somehow work if they wish hard enough.

Also the Dims scream bloody murder when someone wants to keep the fruit of
their labors rather than have it forcibly extracted from them at gunpoint
and given to someone else. If you want to help "the poor" you are free to
do so. Use your own money and resources to render such assistance. Start
a foundation or a charity devoted to them. However you have no business
putting a gun to someone else's head via government proxy and picking
their pockets. That's no different than the modus operandi of a common
street mugger.

The phrase "world's richest nation" is misleading. It invites the
fallacy of division, which ascribes a characteristic of the whole to its
parts.

America has the biggest national economy (GDP) in the world, but it
ranks only 19th in per capita GDP. When China's economy passes that of
America's, its per capita GDP (currently 113th) will still be far below
that of Qatar (1st), whose total economy is smaller than Singapore's
(6th per capita) and only about 2 percent the size of China's.

I'm not sure America ever led the world in per capita GDP. In 1870, the
leader was Australia. (Lots of sheep, few people.) In any case, median
income is better than per capita GDP, much less total GDP, as a metric
for the overall prosperity of a nation. On that measure, America does
better but still trails Norway and Luxembourg, among others.

It's true that a lot of Americans have gotten poorer over the past 15
years. But talking or writing about it won't do much. Nor will raising
the federal minimum wage, which is slightly higher today (in constant
dollars) than it was in 2001. In the meantime, more Americans are now
unemployed or underemployed.

Were you drinking when you wrote your post or is your spell checker corrupted?
When I was able bodied, me and my friends helped people out all the time. I never resented any tax money going to help those in need. I've always had a problem with Commiecrats using my tax dollars to buy votes from the entitlement class and protected species. I'm being helped now because I'm disabled and can no longer work. Social Security and Medicaid are taking pretty good care of me and I'm grateful for what little I have. Some wonderful people have helped me and wanted nothing in return except my thanks.

Perhaps it's just because I live in The South where most people are used to helping others because of their upbringing? I've done some traveling and the people I've met all seemed to desire the same things like safety and a good life. When I was out in Californiastan, I met some of the most horrible backstabbing weasels and it was more than one. It seemed to be common in the workforce and a general attitude. It wasn't everyone but there were just too many for me to tolerate. Stomping someone until they quit twitching can land a feller in jail. I believe it has a lot to do with population density. I'm thinking that the tighter you pack people into a given area, the worse their behavior. ヽ(ΰ²*_ΰ²*)γƒŽ

Take a look for yourself. Our poor people have more amenities than
the poor in other countries.

Air conditioning
Home heating
Smart phones
Game consoles
Expensive cars like Cadillacs
Plasma 50" televisions
Internet access
Cable TV
Computers
Clean water in the home
Indoor Toilets
Food stamps
Government housing
Electricity
Light bulbs
Dining ware like plates, spoons, forks & knives.
Shelter to live in
Locks on their doors

What did I miss?

There was a world conference on helping the poor and an American attendee said,"Some of our people are so poor, they have to live in their cars." A Third World attendee was shocked and blurted out,"Your poor people own cars?!" O_o

Exactly. We have defined "poor" up so far that "poor people" live here
better than the upper class in lots of countries.
What is the poverty level? $25k? That is 10 to 40 times more than real
"poor" people in the world.
When you throw another $20k - 50k on top of that from the government,
they are not starving.

I did a really quick search out of curiosity. About 10% of
federal expenditures go to safety net programs. Tithe?
http://www.cbpp.org/research/federal-budget/policy-basics-where-do-our-federal-tax-dollars-go
That doesn't include whatever the individual states do. It doesn't
include Medicaid.
Who knows how well that 10% is spent?

There is too much waste and inefficiency in a lot of government programs. I'd like to see a serious effort by government agencies to eliminate waste and fraud. I received a blood glucose meter, lancets and test strips from a diabetic supply company. The company charged Medicaid $80.00 for the meter alone. The blood glucose meter is available online for $16.00. The meter, 100 test strips and a lancing device is $21.30 on Amazon. The supply company hasn't violated any law because Medicaid has agreed to pay that price but I believe the company can charge that price because no one at the state agency handling Medicaid is paying attention to what Medicaid is being charged.. I wonder what else Medicaid is paying 5 times the retail price for? The diabetic supply company billed Medicaid $175.00 for what was sent to me. That's at least $125.00 more than I could have bought everything online for. ヽ(ΰ²*_ΰ²*)γƒŽ

What is the poverty level? $25k? That is 10 to 40 times more than real
"poor" people in the world.
When you throw another $20k - 50k on top of that from the government,
they are not starving.

I agree with you on that.

I don't know where you reside but I would ask if you've seen the same behavior that I've witnessed over the years. I grew up in both a small town and a rural area. In the small town, neighbors looked out for one another and in the rural area of farms, if you were lost and stopped at a farmhouse to ask directions, chances were you'd be invited in for refreshments and a meal..

Humans are social creatures but when there are too many too close together, behavior changes. I remember my family being able to leave the house unlocked and keys in our vehicles until vermin from the cities invaded the rural area we lived in. All the sudden, homes in the area were being burglarized.. One house down the mountain from us was cleaned out by someone backing a truck up to it and taking everything. Some of the vermin hit our house too and stole the stereo system my older brother had bought in Japan when he was on leave from his tour in Vietnam.

I have no idea what the rural area is like now since I've been away for so long. The vermin are more mobile and able to communicate these days. Cellphones didn't exist back when I lived on the farm. ”Œ( ΰ²*_ΰ²*)”˜

The only gun that should be unloaded is a caulk gun. Do you unload
your staple gun?

I have one, but haven't used it for about 10 years.

I don't drink and I turned the spell checker off long ago. The only
error in my post was a second S on towards.

The typical republican is always bitching about their tax money going
to social services for those, who like the people in the West Virginia
coal towns referenced in the original post, have nothing since the
coal mines shut down and there are no jobs to be had in the area.

Don't know if you call West Virginia the "south" - I do. And yes, MANY
of those people would give you the shirt off their backs, even if they
didn't have a spare. The haves are generally not as generous as the
have-nots.
Wmhen I was able bodied, me and my friends helped people out all the time. I never resented any tax money going to help those in need. I've always had a problem with Commiecrats using my tax dollars to buy votes from the entitlement class and protected species. I'm being helped now because I'm disabled and can no longer work. Perhaps it's just because I live in The South where most people are used to helping others because of their upbringing? It wasn't everyone but there were just too many for me to tolerate. Stomping someone until they quit twitching can land a feller in jail. I believe it has a lot to do with population density. Take a look for yourself. Our poor people have more amenities than
the poor in other countries.

Air conditioning
Home heating
Smart phones
Game consoles
Expensive cars like Cadillacs
Plasma 50" televisions
Internet access
Cable TV
Computers
Clean water in the home
Indoor Toilets
Food stamps
Government housing
Electricity
Light bulbs
Dining ware like plates, spoons, forks & knives.
Shelter to live in
Locks on their doors

What did I miss?

There was a world conference on helping the poor and an American attendee said,"Some of our people are so poor, they have to live in their cars." A Third World attendee was shocked and blurted out,"Your poor people own cars?!" O_o

[8~{} Uncle Po Monster

There are many poor in America who have no air conditioning, cannot
afford the electricity, propane, or oil required to heat their homes,
have NO phone, NO game consolesw, can only afford to drive 20 year old
cadilacs because no-one else wants them so they are as cheap as a
bicycle, have an old 26 inch CRT TV that's no good now because there
is no analog OTA TV any more, and there is no cable or high speed
internet available IF they could afford it. Some still carry their
water from a well in the back yard and have no indoor plumbing - but
those are getting fewer and farther between.
Food stamps are pretty universal, but getting government housing can
be a 10 year wait in many areas -

Do they have it better than the poor in many third world countries?
Definitely. But that's no excuse.

I would catagorize myself as a fairly typical Republican; I am fiscally
conservative, socially moderate. I have no problem having some portion of
my taxes go to help those who are temporarily needy. The key word there is
"temporarily"; what I object to - and I suspect most do - is the creation of
a government dependent class...one that goes on generation after generation.

Instead of handouts, I would prefer to see programs designed to help people
help themselves. Of course, such a program could only help those who
desired to help themselves. That requires some sense of individual
responsibility from those for whom the program is designed and such sense of
responsibilty seems to be becoming in shorter and shorter supply.

Another thing to which I object is the virtually automatic bestowing of aid
(keeps the social worker bureaucracy going). For example...

SOCIAL WORKER: You are applying for AFDC for another child?? You are
already getting it for four kids..

FEMALE APPLICANT: **** happens.

ME: **** doesn't have to be paid for.

West Virginia was a Yankee state, went to the Union and was not
Southern.

Virginia was divided, thus West Virginia becoming a state during the
