The stupid bugger had gone 6 years without work at the time of his
pathetic blame-the-girlfriend lawsuit. It's probably a lot more than
that now, which would explain most of his problems.

It certainly exacerbates them, but there's an underlying problem
that's probably keeping him from holding a job.
