You can also use the inverters from an old disposable photoflash unit
in combination with a cockcroft-walton multiplier. I have some

The unit i designed and built was for around 9 kV, but you can
scale it down if you want.. The voltage from a CW-multiplier is close
to (Source voltage) * 2 * (Number of stages). The voltage on each
capacitor should be rated at least 2 * Source Voltage: peak to peak,
not RMS.

I would like to make a simple DC power supply capable of giving around 4KV.
The current only needs to be small. Is it possible to make such a power
supply that runs off a 9V battery? If it is, can anyone give me some
pointers on making one, links to schematics would be even better. I'm
hoping I could use an off the shelf transformer, rather than making my own.
