Completely wrong approach IMHO.

Just say: "Can you hold on a minute...." and get on with something else.
Put the phone back 5 mins later, or keep coming back to them to get them
to hold on longer.

I've given up winding them up, it doesn't take my name off the list and just
wastes my time.

I now just say "no thanks", click
