Not sure why this is particularly newsworthy now - it's been known
for decades there's loads of nuclear junk there. Also in some of
the former USSR countries which have no money to deal with the
legacy they've been left with.
There are a thousand or so abandoned/lost/stolen thermal decay reacters
which were used to power lighthouses. Theives often cut them up with
angle griders for the scrap metal, and die a few days later. Even
the authorities have dropped several in failed salvage attempts,
only to watch them melt their way into the ice and dissappear from
sight.
