Consider the Mongol invasion of Persia. They killed 80% of the people. They
killed EVERYONE in Baghdad, tore down every structure, and set fire to the
rubble. The destroyed all the dams and irrigation capability. It took a
thousand years for Persia (Iraq, Iran, etc.) to recover.
