There will be no "safe" places. To defend an average 5 acre property would
take many people working shifts, and being heavily armed with superior
weapons. Sniping, booby traps, and artillery would take a toll. How many
people do you know who know how to do perimeter patrol effectively? And how
quickly would the people living in the compound consume what had been
stored.

Remember, you can't go out to the garden because you'll be sniped, and all
the meat bearing animals will be either stolen or killed. As with the
ancient Indians, bands of a few will be living in holes in the rock high up,
defending themselves against cannibalistic attackers. Yes, cannibalism was
verified in the post 1330 drought that brought down the Anasazi/Pueblo
culture who, at that time had a thriving agricultural water system, society,
and economy.

The idea the LDS proposes for their members to keep a supply of food on hand
is practical to protect against loss of income, hard times, and such, but in
a real social meltdown, it would be almost useless.

And what happens when friends, family, and neighbors start running out? How
do you select who you will share with, and how much will that dilute your
own chances for survival?
