I remember the yearly switch-on when my Dad leapt into action. The
solid fuel parkray fire had to be stoked and the central heating pump
"primed", which seem to involve hitting it with the same metal bar
that was used to "persuade" the car starter motor into action. Those
were the days ...

Did your Mum have to fetch the coal and clean out the fire?
