I happened to try a stoneware bowl instead of a coffee mug a week or so
ago and my girlfriend said her grandmother and mother used to sharpen
their knives like that all the time. Oh, and the girlfriend said the
knife worked GREAT after the sharpening, better than with the cheap
knife sharpener I normally use.

And the "sharpening steel" technically doesn't sharpen a knife, it just
"puts a edge on it" whatever the hell that means I don't exactly know.

It "unrolls" the curl at the edge.
