It wasn't J Clarke that asked the question, but he did submit a practical,
easy method for just holding up the loose end of a chain.

Some of the dimmer responders couldn't understand why anyone would want to
shorten a chain, and/or, would rather twist the chain to shorten it, or
would tie knots in a chain to shorten it.

Explanations are often worthless.

you asked the question. Sounds like a very good case of self criticism for
a task that is rather simple. Did you expect the group to do your
measurements, determine the type and location of the attachment points and
pull the correct length out of our ass?
