Default Indicator stand question, and vernier height guage question - repairs

G'Day,

long story short, I've obtained one of each of these in various states of
neglect and disrepair. I've decided to try rebuilding them back to their
operational state.

The Magbase indicator stand - the main post would be threaded into the magnetic
baseeffectively bridging the two poles. If I make this post from Steel (magnetic)
will this pose an issue for weakening the holding field?
What are these posts typically made off, and what dimensions are they typically?
I have measured the thread as Metric 8mm coarse, but that's all I know at
this stage.

The vernier height guage. The one I saved is a Mitoyu with an adjustable
300mm ruler, vernier on the slide, and a few other controls. There is minor
cosmetic damage here and there, including some damaged screws, but those
I can fix easy enough. What is missing is the clamp, and "pointy bit" which
is attached to the sliding component. This tool appears on the cover of "The
machinist's bedside reader #2", and the "pointy bit" appears to be a sharp
edged piece - either for scribing, or perhaps for feeling an edge.
Is there an online reference which shows how to use this tool, and what the
pointy bit is used for?
If for scribing, I was planning on reproducing the missing part from HSS,
but if this is an issue, please tell me what it should be for, and made of.

thanks,
Des
