before that. The hot water gets to the faucet.

Run the water down the drain until it gets hot at the tap, bringing in cold
water into the heater.

or

Run the same amount of water back to the heater till it is hot at the tap,
bringing in no cold water to the heater.

Which one wastes the most water?
