Really? I thought much of the foundations of the NHS were made long
before 1948 by politicians like Lloyd George who introduced National
Insurance. Much of the bedrock of the NHS was built by Tory ministers
during the second world war.

The Tories opposed it all along, as they did with ALL social reform - as
Brown highlighted last night in his speech. It is true the Libs laid
foundations for the welfare state.

Bevan in WW2, based the NHS on a voluntary system in a Welsh village. He
laid it all down and Atlee implement it post WW2.

Naturally I do conced that the NHS as we know it was created under a
Labour government.
