Have you gone into the bios and set the parallel port to 'enhanced' or
'Bi-directional' operation, or tried a USB connection?

The scanner portion of my HP DeskJet is accessible from other programs
using just the Vista basic drivers on USB.

The HP Solution Centre software does offer a 'Scan to PDF option', but
I don't know if it is available for your printer.
