Ah, the old Motorola "Unauthorized Charger" display.

A standard Motorola USB charger puts ~1.4vdc onto the x pin (the 5th
pin) of the mini USB plug. A Motorola phone looks for that voltage and
will display "Unauthorized Charger" if it doesn't see it. So you can't
charge your phone from a USB port using a standard USB to Mini USB cable
(though if you have Motorola Phone Tools running on the computer it
will work).

I've found the last thing to work. So, the phone must have TWO ways to
enable charging (I was still using the same cable after installing the
software and how could software have made it grow that voltage
divider?).

The software tells the phone to not worry about seeing that voltage on
pin x of the USB connector.

OK. Should that setting persist, so then the phone will charge from
any USB cable (software not required)?

No. The phone knows when it's connected to Motorola Phone Tools. It
doesn't persist.

See "http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-A-N/razrv3_charger_pinout.shtml"
for the hack to fix this (but then you can't use that cable for Motorola
Phone Tools).

Or buy this cable for $1.99, free shipping:
