I read in one of the trade mags that the check valve must be
fitted indoors nowadays, as they are destroyed by frost outdoors.

I had one indoors knackerd by the outside tap freezing - the water
expansion jammed the second piston of the double check valve such that
it would not open. Had to remove it in the end, making it a single check
valve.
