Default OT Space Shuttle question

If you find out, let the rest of us know. I wrote to NASA a few years
ago with the same question and never received an answer. I have to
assume that the shower of sparks is to ignite any gathering fuel before
is can collect into a dangerous amount, but that's just my opinion.
