If these are typical hollow core doors, leave the tops alone.
Score cut through the veneer to avoid splintering. Cut what you
need at the bottom. Take an appropriate size stick to push the
cardboard filler up into the door just a bit. Use a sharp chisel
or whatever to clean the veneer, etc off the original door bottom
stile. Glue, insert, and clamp.
