The output device feeds it, period. THE INPUT device is where
decisions get made as to whether or not you get it in full res.

Well, there you have it. Just how ignorant you really are about this techy
stuff. It's a negotiation. If what you say were true, then recording the
signal would be a cakewalk. The playback device will most certainly not
hand the signal off to a device that it doesn't trust. It's that simple.
