If it is the packing thats leaking then you could try tightening the
packing nut at the stem. Tighten up only enough to stop the leak or
you could make the situation worse. As far as sweating copper, is
the valve truly soldered on? A lot of them are put on with
compression fittings. If it is you can remove the valve by unscrewing
the compression nut and then using a compression nut/faucet handle
puller to pull of the old nut and sleeve. A puller costs about $10.00
at Home Depot or Lowes.
