It is disturbing -- repulsive, really -- when a politician follows a
compass of polls. In my view, one who does is in clear need of an
internal one. Unfortunately, however, it appears to me that to be a
successful politician, one needs to have such a whimsical guide. How did
Douglas Adams say it? "Anyone capable of getting themselves made
president should on no account be allowed to do the job." Or something
like that.
