It's not just a matter of etiquette-- many news servers automatically
delete binary postings in non-binary newsgroups, so a lot of us don't
even see them.

The binary newsgroups are kept separate because they take up a *huge*
amount of bandwidth and disk space, compared to the text newsgroups, and
they put a big strain on the servers (a picture is a lot more data than a
thousand words).
