Funny, that has never happened to me. I have never consider it a
problem when I have been in countries where I did not understand the local
language. I have always managed to get by.

Same here. As long as I made a little effort to attempt their language, I've
always found foreigners to be helpful. Maybe if you don't act like un
pendejo, it helps.
