Read "Tools For The Job" by LTC Rolt.
Superb book, and Tom Rolt was also a pioneer in the preservation of
industrial archaeology.

Names to conjure with are "Watt & Boulton" "Bramah", "Whitworth",
various US gunsmiths, and the Norton grinding wheel company. The RAC
Cadillac re-assembly trial is worth studying too.
